Mesh Labs Projects

Flow Forward

Flow Forward is an award-winning VR game created by Mesh Labs in collaboration with the Arizona Water Innovation Initiative. Players shrink to pilot a tiny submarine through a water purification plant, battling contaminants at each treatment stage and finishing with a celebratory debrief alongside policymakers. Designed as a playful gateway to serious topics, the experience turns water reuse education into immersive, gamified learning.

Key goals

Immersion and interactivity

Put learners at the center of the plant—navigating units, operating controls, and confronting contaminants in real time.

Education through play

Explain water reuse, treatment stages and public health impacts via clear goals, feedback and narrative scaffolding.

Spread awareness

Impact

Flow Forward supports statewide water-literacy efforts by making complex treatment processes tangible and memorable. It will tour Arizona with the WaterSIMmersive project, reaching schools and community events, and is planned to launch on the Meta Store and Steam—extending access beyond the classroom.

Contribution

With guidance from ASU faculty and subject-matter experts, students led scripting, level design, art, audio, testing and delivery—gaining practical skills while producing a polished public-impact experience.

  • Design and development
Core gameplay loops, submarine UI, level flow, and feedback systems
  • Narrative and learning design
Story beats that align with treatment stages and policy context
  • Art and audio
3D environments, characters, animation, and spatial audio for treatment units
  • Accessibility
Subtitles and clear UI cues to support diverse learners

It takes a great team and a passionate client to get something like this to the finish line!
